A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING MR. GLEN BUCKALEW ON WINNING THE BANDWORLD LEGION OF HONOR AWARD.
WHEREAS, Mr. Glen Buckalew, director of bands at Gulfport High School, was honorably presented the Bandworld Legion of Honor Award in December 1998, at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, selected as one of the ten best high school band directors in the country, Mr. Buckalew is the first Mississippian ever to receive the award, which was established in 1989 and is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation; and
WHEREAS, only one year earlier, Mr. Buckalew won a seven-state National Federation of Interscholastic Music Award; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Buckalew, who is in his eleventh year at Gulfport High, has led the Gulfport High School Band to straight superior ratings in concert and marching at the Mississippi State Band Festival; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his success at Gulfport High School, Mr. Buckalew has won several state awards, including the A.E. McClain Outstanding Young Band Director of Mississippi, the Outstanding Band Director of Mississippi by the American School Band Director Association, the Phi Beta Mu Mississippi Band Director of the Year and the National Federation of Interscholastic Music Mississippi Band Director of the Year; and
WHEREAS, humble and unpretentious, Mr. Buckalew generously gives credit to the school district, and his students, staff and family for his having been honored with the Legion of Honor Award; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend such outstanding Mississippians as Mr. Buckalew, who has inspired and touched the lives of so many young musicians:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mr. Glen Buckalew on winning the Bandworld Legion of Honor Award and extend to him our heartiest wishes for success in all his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Glen Buckalew, Gulfport High School and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
